Change of extension policy for travel documents

As of July 18, 2011, refugee travel documents and certificates of identity issued prior to July 18, 2010, will no longer be extendable. The new policy of not extending the validity period of travel documents conforms to new security features and the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Until July 17, 2011, a travel document issued before July 18, 2010, with a validity period of less than five years may be extended.

To extend your travel document, return your expired document by mail, by courier or in person, and include:

  • a completed and signed form PPTC 316, available at any Passport Canada office OR a letter signed by you requesting the extension and giving your address, the purpose and duration of your trip and the countries you intend to visit.
  • one of the following original immigration status documents:
    • a valid permanent resident card,
    • a valid protected person status document, or
    • a valid temporary resident permit.
  • the $12 fee, and
  • if applicable, a receipt (IMM 5401) from Citizenship and Immigration Canada to show that you have applied for Canadian citizenship.

For applicants with a protected person status document (PPSD) or a temporary resident permit (TRP), the travel document will only be valid until the date of expiry of the PPSD or TRP.
