Coming soon—we’re moving to Canada.ca

We’re almost ready to launch the new passport section on Canada.ca. This change will make it easier to find the passport information you need.

Question

Can I keep my valid passport until I receive my new one?

Answer

No, if you have a valid passport you must submit it with your application for a new one. But, if you have a valid passport, you may be eligible to apply for a new passport through our simplified renewal process.

The passport can also be used as supporting identification for a new application as long as:

  • the passport is still valid or has expired within the past year,
  • the original passport is submitted with the application (photocopies will not be accepted), and
  • the name in the passport is the same as the name on the new application.
